The science behind
every score.
GymChamp doesn't guess your fitness. Every test is a recognised, protocol-based assessment — the same ones used in sports science research. And every benchmark is traceable to published data or a transparent derivation model. This page shows you exactly where the numbers come from.
How our benchmarks are built
Every benchmark carries two labels: provenance (where the data comes from) and validation status (how much scrutiny it's been through). We show both openly — because a score is only as trustworthy as the evidence behind it.
PROVENANCE — WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM
Directly from peer-reviewed research, national fitness surveys, or established sports science norms. The strongest evidence — we didn't adjust or model anything.
Built from published data using a transparent, documented derivation method — for example, converting units, extrapolating across age bands, or combining related studies. Every step is recorded in the source notes.
A GymChamp reference model, used where no matched published data exists. Always provisional — designed to be replaced by derived or published benchmarks as evidence is gathered.
VALIDATION — HOW MUCH SCRUTINY IT'S HAD
Checked against independent external data. Highest confidence.
Validated against GymChamp's own collected data. Solid confidence.
Checked during early piloting. Improving confidence.
Not yet validated. Use the score as a guide, not a guarantee.
How a raw result becomes a score
Most tests use anchor interpolation. Each benchmark stores percentile anchors (typically the 5th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 95th percentile) for your age band and sex. Your raw result is plotted against these anchors and a 1–100 score is interpolated between the two nearest points — so a score of 75 means you sit around the 75th percentile for your demographic. Raw performance beyond the evidence range is kept as a personal best but never extrapolated into a score.

Our commitment to honesty
Some of our benchmarks are provisional or GymChamp-defined — we say so openly. Where no published data exists for a test and demographic, we build a transparent model and label it clearly, rather than pretending it's peer-reviewed. As we gather more data, every benchmark moves up the validation ladder. That's the difference between a marketing claim and a real methodology.
